Burst Apart

I
t's awful news to get here. It's awful news to get anywhere.
At 3:30pm in La Paz, the papers hit the stands and suddenly everyone is holding a copy, buried in the folds as they walk.
"Terror en EEUU"
"Pesadilla Terrorista Sacude a EEUU"
"El Corazon de los Estados Unidos Fue Atacado"
The little shoe shine boys are slackjawed leaning over the horrifying pictures, grainy screen shots taken from CNN of people screaming and grabbing their heads. The old women who sell water and candy are struck silent, reading the story which isn't so much a story as a frustrating lack of detail accompanying a huge and devastating photo of the World Trade Center, burst apart.
I hadn't seen it yet.
Oh my God, I hadn't seen it yet.
